Alfred Lin of Sequoia Capital topped the 23rd edition of the Midas List thanks to valuations of Airbnb, Reddit, and OpenAI ($86 billion). The top 10 also included Mickey Malka (Coinbase), Neil Shen (ByteDance), and other investors. The ranking considers IPOs or deals worth $200 million or more over five years; the list includes 13 female investors.
In the 23rd annual Midas List, compiled in partnership with TrueBridge Capital Partners, investor Alfred Lin from Sequoia Capital returned to the top spot. His portfolio includes both the 2020 IPO of Airbnb and one of the new offerings of 2024, Reddit.
The $86 billion valuation of AI unicorn OpenAI helped seven investors make the list, including Vinod Khosla from Khosla Ventures, who jumped 76 positions to take ninth place.
Among other notable AI companies are Anthropic and Cohere, mentioned in various parts of the text. However, it was the rapidly growing valuation of Elon Musk's space company, SpaceX, that helped investor Randy Gailey from DFJ Growth return to the list at number 14 after a five-year hiatus, becoming one of several investors who re-entered the Midas List after previously dropping out. They were joined by six newcomers, including Trey Stevens at number 91, who co-founded and later supported the tech company Anduril for Founders Fund, and Wesley Chan from FPV Ventures at number 98, who was one of the early investors in Canva.
The 2024 Midas List includes 13 female investors, matching the record set in 2021. Among them are Annabel You Long from BAI Capital and Annie Lamont from Oak HC/FT, who returned to the list after nine years.
The ranking is based on data from open sources and investment partners. To qualify for the list, companies in an investor's portfolio must have gone public or been acquired for at least $200 million in the last five years, or doubled their private valuation to $400 million or more during the same period. Forbes and TrueBridge allow splitting credit for a deal between two investors and prioritize liquid exits.
