A Gallup poll (February 2024) showed that 22% of workers fear being displaced by AI, while 72% of Fortune 500 HR executives expect job replacements within the next three years. However, professions requiring empathy and creativity will remain with humans: social workers, artists, doctors, managers, craftsmen, and teachers. A Pew Research Center poll revealed that 60% of patients are uncomfortable trusting AI-driven decisions to doctors, and a Potential Project study showed that 57% of employees distrust AI management.
AI raises concerns among workers about job displacement. Although some roles may be at risk of automation, jobs requiring human empathy are unlikely to be replaced by artificial intelligence.
Concerns about job displacement are growing as artificial intelligence and automation penetrate the workforce.
A Gallup poll conducted in February 2024 showed that 22% of respondents fear that their jobs will be taken over by technology, and 72% of human resources executives from the Fortune 500 anticipate that AI will replace jobs in the next three years.
Industries such as customer service and manufacturing are increasingly using AI technologies, including machine learning, to perform routine and repetitive tasks, raising the question of whether AI will replace certain professions.
Despite technological advancements and the integration of robots, some professions remain beyond the reach of artificial intelligence. This is because these roles require deep empathy, emotional intuition, creativity, and unique human interaction, which AI cannot replicate.
1. Social Workers
Social work relies on empathy, trust, and emotional insight to support individuals and communities facing challenges such as poverty, abuse, and mental health issues.
2. Fine Arts
Art is another field where AI will never fully penetrate. While AI can be used to enhance performances or assist in creating new artistic experiences, the likelihood of it replacing the core elements of art is unrealistic.
Some might argue that AI technologies, including deepfakes and 3D modeling, can change the film industry. But despite advancements in these technologies—such as de-aging actors or recreating performers who are no longer alive—actors remain crucial for scriptwriting and directing. Their experience provides genuine emotional expression and movement, demonstrating that AI cannot fully replace humans in this field.
3. Doctors and Healthcare Workers
AI is improving healthcare, as evidenced by breakthroughs such as sepsis detection, skin cancer diagnosis, and algorithms that predict atrial fibrillation 30 minutes before it starts, allowing for proactive measures.
Although AI enhances medical care and diagnosis, it cannot replace the judgment and emotional support provided by doctors and healthcare workers. A survey conducted by the Pew Research Center showed that 60% of participants would feel uncomfortable if their primary care provider relied on AI for medical care. It is unrealistic to expect patients to trust a robot or algorithm with making important, life-changing decisions, such as taking pain medication or creating a treatment plan for an illness.
4. Organizational Leadership Roles
Leadership roles require nuanced communication and complex decision-making skills that cannot be reduced to simple code or linear processes.
According to research conducted by Potential Project, most people doubt AI's ability to understand human behavior at work as well as human leaders do: 57% do not trust it, and 22% remain neutral. Of more than 600 employees surveyed, 45% were open to positive feedback generated by AI, possibly due to AI's ability to provide personalized real-time analysis.
AI can handle routine tasks, giving leaders more time for strategy and personal engagement, but it cannot replace them. Effective leaders bring a vision of the future, strategic thinking, team motivation, and a level of authenticity that even well-trained AI models cannot achieve.
5. Skilled Tradespeople
Skilled tradespeople, such as plumbers and electricians, are difficult to replace with artificial intelligence because they require manual dexterity, the ability to adapt to unpredictable situations, and problem-solving skills.
Although AI cannot replace skilled trades, it can improve them by providing predictive maintenance. In heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, AI algorithms can be used to analyze temperature, pressure, and sensor data to detect potential problems before they occur.
6. Teachers and Educators
According to a report by the World Economic Forum on the future of learning, AI is expected to complement teaching rather than replace teachers. This is primarily because the role of teachers and educators goes beyond providing information.
