For the first time in the history of Kazakhstan and Central Asia, the 2024 ICPC World Finals, the final of the World Championship in Sports Programming, took place, marking a significant milestone in the development of the region's IT sector. In Astana, 142 teams from around the world gathered, including Kazakhstani teams representing the country's leading technical universities: Nazarbayev University, the International University of Information Technologies, Astana IT University, the Kazakhstan-British Technical University, and Suleyman Demirel University.
The championship was not only a competition among the best young programmers but also a platform for educational and professional events. Students and their coaches participated in the ICPC Challenge by Huawei and the Kotlin Heros coding event organized by JetBrains, where coaches who had prepared teams for the finals five or more times were awarded. Among the awardees were Kazakhstani coaches Temirlan Satylkhanov from Astana IT University and Eskendir Sultanov from the International University of Information Technologies.
September 19 became the decisive day of the championship. In the final, teams competed in a five-hour marathon solving the most complex problems. The team from the Kazakhstan-British Technical University was the first to solve the problem "Doubles Horseback Wrestling" at the championship. Aibar Kuanyshbay, a coach from Kazakhstan, became the winner of the Huawei Challenge among coaches, adding another significant achievement to the successes of Kazakhstani teams at the championship.
The winners were announced at a ceremonial awards ceremony held at the Congress Center, where the best teams received their well-deserved medals, and the main winners—the team from China representing Peking University—lifted the World Champions Cup.
Kazakhstani teams also demonstrated high competitiveness. The team from the International University of Information Technologies entered the top thirty best teams in the world, surpassing such universities as Cambridge, Stanford, California, and Berkeley. Kazakhstani universities—Nazarbayev University, the Kazakhstan-British Technical University, and Astana IT University—outperformed more than 90 teams out of 142 participants at the World Championship in Sports Programming, confirming the high level of training and expertise.
