The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a concessional loan of $100 million to implement the "Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Education in Secondary Schools" project in Uzbekistan. The initiative aims to improve the quality of STEM education and prepare a new generation of specialists for the future economy.
The project is being implemented in partnership with the Ministry of Public Education of the Republic of Uzbekistan and will cover 200 general education schools nationwide. Educational institutions will be equipped with modern laboratory and computer equipment, as well as provided with access to digital educational resources. To enhance energy efficiency, solar panels will be installed in schools, and inclusive infrastructure for children with special needs will be created.
Special attention is given to teacher training: a large-scale professional development program will be organized for them in six key STEM areas. Curricula will be updated to incorporate an interdisciplinary approach and the use of digital tools in the educational process.
The project also includes support for girls' participation in STEM fields through career guidance programs, science promotion campaigns, and individual counseling aimed at fostering interest in technology.
In collaboration with the ADB, a monitoring and evaluation system for the quality of STEM teaching will be established, helping to track the effectiveness of reforms and implement best practices.
According to the bank, the implementation of the project will strengthen school capacity, enhance the competitiveness of graduates, and serve as an important step toward innovative and sustainable development of Uzbekistan's education system.
