On May 17–18, 2025, Uzbekistan hosted the Asia-Pacific Informatics Olympiad (APIO) for the first time, with approximately 900 school students from more than 40 countries participating. As a result of the competition, three representatives of Uzbekistan—Djavahir Toshtemirov, Izzat Akbarov, and Timur Kadyrbergenov—won bronze medals, bringing the country's total number of awards to six. The event marked an important step in preparation for the International Olympiad in Informatics, which will be held in the country next year.
The Center for the Development of Digital Education under the Ministry of Digital Technologies of the Republic of Uzbekistan continues its systematic work to engage youth in the field of information technology, particularly through participation in international olympiads. This helps foster logical and algorithmic thinking, a creative approach, and robust problem-solving skills in the younger generation.
On May 17–18, 2025, Uzbekistan hosted for the first time one of the largest regional competitions in competitive programming for school students — the Asia-Pacific Informatics Olympiad (APIO). APIO is an online olympiad designed for youth with a high level of algorithmic preparation and is considered an important stage in preparing for the most prestigious international programming competition — the International Olympiad in Informatics.
This year, approximately 900 school students from over 40 countries participated in the olympiad. The competition was held online over a period of 36 hours. Each participant solved contest problems in the C++ programming language within a five-hour window, at a time pre-selected by the team leader during registration.
For participants from Uzbekistan, the olympiad took place on May 18. More than 50 selected students from various regions of Uzbekistan competed against each other and against their international peers.
APIO is now in its 19th edition and annually brings together the strongest young programmers. An online closing ceremony for APIO 2025 was held on May 27, where the results were announced.
According to the results, three young programmers from Uzbekistan won bronze medals:
— Dzavkhir Toshtemirov, an 11th-grade student at the Mirzo Ulugbek Specialized School
— Izzat Akbarov, an 11th-grade student at the Muhammad al-Khwarizmi Specialized School
— Timur Kadyrbergenov, a 10th-grade student at the Presidential School in the city of Nukus.
Previously, Uzbekistan had only three APIO medals in its record; in 2025, this number increased to six. This is a clear indication of the growing level of preparation among the country’s young programmers.
The olympiad is becoming increasingly international: this year, teams from Brazil, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt, and other countries beyond the region participated in APIO.
Hosting such a prestigious olympiad as APIO allows Uzbekistan not only to demonstrate a high level of organizational capability but also to strengthen its organizational potential and technical capacities in advance of the main international event in competitive programming — the International Olympiad in Informatics, which will take place in Uzbekistan next year. Approximately 400 school students from more than 90 countries will participate in it.
