OpenAI announced plans to develop an artificial intelligence capable of conducting scientific research independently. According to CEO Sam Altman, an AI at the level of a "scientific intern" will be available by September 2026, and by 2028, a system that can act as a full-fledged researcher will be launched.
OpenAI's Chief Scientist Jakub Pachocki clarified that this refers to an AI capable of autonomously setting tasks, formulating hypotheses, and conducting experiments without constant human oversight. The company is focusing on improving algorithms and significantly increasing computing power so that "the machine can think longer and deeper."
Current models already demonstrate results comparable to participants in the International Mathematical Olympiad and can operate for five hours without human intervention.
Additionally, the company announced a change in its legal status—OpenAI has now become a public benefit organization, giving it greater flexibility to attract investments. The OpenAI Foundation, a nonprofit fund, received 26% of the company's shares and committed to using the company's technologies worth $25 billion for medical and research initiatives.
