The Ministry of Economy of Kyrgyzstan has put forward for discussion a bill to transition the "digital nomad" status from a pilot project to a permanent program. Launched in September 2022 and extended until June 30, 2024, the project allows citizens of EAEU countries, Azerbaijan, and Moldova to stay in the country without registration and work permits. In the first year, nearly 1,600 people out of 4,000 applicants received the status.
The Ministry of Economy wants to legalize the status of “digital nomad” and make it permanently available in the country. The relevant document has been submitted for public discussion.
The goal of the proposed legislation is to transition the pilot project granting the “digital nomad” status to foreign citizens to a permanent basis. The status will be enshrined in law, and its holders will receive permanent privileges.
Currently, the “digital nomad” status is a pilot project — it was launched in Kyrgyzstan in September 2022. On September 21 of this year, the Cabinet of Ministers extended the pilot project’s validity until June 30, 2024.
The online portal for issuing the “digital nomad” status was launched to attract IT specialists to the country. The status is granted to citizens of EAEU countries, as well as Azerbaijan and Moldova. It allows citizens of these countries to stay in Kyrgyzstan without registration at their place of stay and without work permits. Thanks to the status, individuals can automatically obtain a personal identification number and other benefits.
In just the first year of the project, four thousand applications were submitted for the digital nomad status. Nearly 1,600 people were granted the status.
