In Kazakhstan, digital identification via Face ID has been implemented to obtain free medications through the "Social Wallet" program, initially launched in the Aktobe region. As of today, 13,000 prescriptions are being fulfilled using this method, which will be rolled out across all cities in the country for patients without smartphones or internet access. Of the total number of prescriptions, 75% are processed through the app, approximately 3% are handled via alternative methods (Face ID, QR codes, SMS), and the remainder remain on paper.
Previously, they could only be issued to patients via a paper prescription. In January, the country began testing the receipt of free medications through a QR code in the "Social Wallet" app. However, some elderly patients do not have smartphones.
An alternative method introduced digital identification specifically through Face ID. It has already been launched in the Aktobe region. As of today, 13,000 prescriptions are fulfilled via Face ID. The patient arrives, undergoes identification at the medical organization's pharmacy point, and receives the medication according to the prescription.
This mechanism will be used in all cities of Kazakhstan for patients who do not have a smartphone or internet access.
Additionally, Kazakhstan offers QR and SMS confirmations. Out of 100% of all prescriptions, 75% are fulfilled through the social wallet, approximately 3% through alternative methods: Face ID, QR, and SMS. The rest are paper-based. Paper prescriptions are still retained to provide people with a choice when obtaining medications by prescription.
