Freedom Telecom has received permission to launch in-flight internet in Kazakhstan using Air-to-Ground technology. The system uses ground-based towers, allowing passengers to use social media, watch videos up to 4K resolution, and participate in video conferences. The first nine base stations will be deployed on the Astana-Almaty route.
In Kazakhstan, in-flight internet may become available using Air-to-Ground (A2G) technology. Freedom Telecom has received the corresponding permit from the regulator.
With A2G technology, air passengers will be able not only to use social networks and messengers during the flight and browse various web pages on their devices, but also to stream high-resolution video up to 4K, watch YouTube, and participate in Zoom conferences. According to Kairat Akhmetov, unlike satellite technology, A2G connectivity relies on ground-based towers similar to those used for standard cellular networks, but with beams directed upward. To receive their signals, aircraft are equipped with special terminals.
The first nine base stations from Freedom Telecom will be deployed on the Astana-Almaty route. The cost of the service for passengers is subject to negotiations with airlines.
