Biotech startup EnsiliTech, founded by Dr. Asel Sartbaeva, has completed its second round of funding, securing £4.5 million in investment to improve the storage and transportation of vital medicines worldwide.
The round was led by Eos Advisory, with participation from Calculus Capital, as well as Empirical Ventures, Fink Family Office, QantX, Angel Investors Bristol, HERmesa, Penn Park Capital, chANGELS, and other private investors. The funds will be used to expand the team, upgrade infrastructure, and accelerate the adoption of the Ensiliсation technology, which enables the integration of new drug stabilization methods into pharmaceutical manufacturing.
The team is primarily composed of female leaders and researchers. This reflects EnsiliTech's commitment to fostering innovation through diversity and inclusion. This factor attracted the investment from HERmesa, a fund that supports only companies with female leadership.
To date, the global pharmaceutical industry relies on the "cold chain" — a system of storage and transportation at low temperatures that has been in place for over 50 years. This system is extremely costly and energy-intensive. It is estimated that failures in the cold chain cost the industry £26 billion annually. According to the WHO, up to 50% of vaccines in developing countries are lost due to cold chain disruptions.
The Ensiliсation technology, patented by EnsiliTech, allows vaccines, antibodies, and other biopharmaceuticals to be stored at temperatures up to +50°C, completely eliminating the need for refrigeration equipment. This opens up the possibility of delivering medicines to the most remote regions of the world, where there is no reliable infrastructure for storage.
Investors have also expressed confidence in the startup's future. EnsiliTech possesses technology capable of radically changing global rules for the storage and transportation of medicines, reducing costs, and increasing therapy accessibility. The company's platform has already demonstrated high commercial demand and has transformative potential for the global healthcare system.
EnsiliTech was established in 2022 as a spin-off from the University of Bath. In a short period, the startup has won several prestigious awards, including the Royal Society of Chemistry Emerging Technologies Competition, was named "Startup of the Year" in the MedTech & HealthTech category, and has won awards for female entrepreneurship and leadership.
