Scammers aim to obtain money or personal data. To protect yourself, use HTTPS, two-factor authentication (Google, Yandex, etc.), and keep your antivirus updated. Avoid online banking over open Wi-Fi, don’t believe in “random jackpots,” and disable password auto-save in your browser.
Scammers are increasingly appearing on the internet, especially under current conditions. The main goal of fraudsters is to deceitfully obtain money from you or steal personal data. Therefore, we have prepared a list of rules that will help protect you and your loved ones. We recommend taking care of your basic digital literacy in advance and informing your relatives so as not to fall for the tricks of attackers.
To prevent personal data leaks or spam attacks on email, use resources whose network address starts with HTTPS. This means that the connection between you and the server is encrypted – the information cannot be intercepted. To increase the level of protection, use HTTPS Everywhere, which automatically forces websites to use the HTTPS protocol instead of HTTP. It can be installed for free in Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Opera browsers, including on mobile devices.
Pay safely! A classic case is when you are redirected to a secure page (the address starts with "https://"). If not, it is better not to take the risk. In addition, do not access online banking and other important services through open Wi-Fi networks in cafes or on the street. Use mobile internet, which is much safer.
A more reliable protection is offered by two-factor authentication. This means that when attempting to log in to a service, you will need to provide two secret proof parameters. If an attacker has obtained the password, they still will not be able to log into the account. Currently, two-factor authentication is used by most major services: Microsoft, Google, Facebook, Yandex, Dropbox, Instagram. For verification, they use SMS, mobile applications, and backup keys.
Install and update antivirus software. This is basic software that ensures security. The tasks of antivirus software include detecting spyware, viruses, phishing resources, dangerous servers, and suspicious traffic. Outdated versions cannot guarantee protection against malware. Every day, several new viruses appear in the world, so the antivirus needs to receive information about methods to combat them as often as possible.
Understand that there are no random jackpots, multi-million inheritances, or unknown wealthy relatives who simply want to share their wealth. Do not fall for this fairy tale and click on suspicious links.
Do not allow the browser to automatically remember passwords for personal sites and pages, and it is better to disable this option in the settings. This is especially true for sites where you need to enter document numbers or bank card details. Auto-saving passwords increases the risk of personal page hacking: if an attacker gains access to your computer, it will not be difficult for them to extract this data from the browser's memory.
