Uzbekistan has relaxed requirements for the storage of personal data.
The President of Uzbekistan has signed a law introducing amendments to the legislation on personal data, which relaxes the requirements for their storage and processing. Now, part of the personal data of citizens may be stored and processed outside the country, provided that certain conditions are met.
According to the new regulations, only specific categories of data are required to be stored within the territory of Uzbekistan. These include biometric and genetic data of individuals, as well as user data of telecommunications service operators operating within the country.
Other types of personal data may be transferred and processed abroad if one of the established requirements is met. In particular, this is possible if the foreign state ensures adequate protection of the rights of personal data subjects, or if the operator uses standard contractual clauses or corporate rules that comply with the requirements of the authorized body. The use of international standards for data management and storage is also permitted.
The changes are expected to facilitate the operation of international payment systems and digital services, including PayPal, Apple Pay, and Google Pay, in the Uzbekistan market.
