In Kazakhstan's trains, satellite internet with high speed is being scaled up.
In Kazakhstan, the deployment of high-speed internet in passenger trains continues. The project is being implemented using satellite technologies and is developing within the framework of the Year of Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence, as well as the Digital Nauryz initiative.
To date, satellite internet is already operational on Talgo trains running on two key routes: Astana – Almaty and Astana – Ust-Kamenogorsk. The project utilizes low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite systems from OneWeb in partnership with the Kazakhstani telecommunications operator Jusan Mobile.
The main difference between this technology and traditional mobile internet is that the signal does not depend on terrestrial infrastructure along the railway tracks. Low Earth orbit satellites provide a stable connection and minimal latency even at high train speeds.
As part of the project, passengers already have access to internet speeds of up to 100 Mbps. This allows them to use messengers, watch videos, and utilize other digital services throughout the journey without significant limitations.
The service launch began with a pilot project in January 2025 on the Astana – Almaty route. According to the agency, the service proved popular among passengers, leading to its expansion to the Astana – Ust-Kamenogorsk route as well.
The project is being implemented in partnership with international technology companies and domestic telecommunications operators. The equipment installed on the trains is adapted for operation under motion conditions and integrated with the existing in-car multimedia systems.
