In Discord, you can now register at the age of 13.
Discord has announced the global rollout of updated safety settings for teens, which will be gradually implemented for all new and existing users worldwide starting in March 2026. The "teen" experience will now be enabled by default for users over the age of 13 and will include updated communication settings, sensitive content filtering, and restricted access to age-restricted channels, servers, and communities. To change individual settings or access sensitive content, users will need to undergo an age verification process.
The age verification system is designed with privacy in mind: users can choose between a selfie-based age assessment or uploading a document through service partners. Video processing occurs on the user's device, and documents are deleted immediately after age verification. Additionally, the company is implementing an automatic account age group detection model that operates in the background and does not always require explicit verification. The age verification status will be visible only to the user themselves and can be disputed in account settings if necessary.
Key changes include the inability to disable sensitive content filtering without adult verification, restricted access to age-restricted spaces, a separate inbox for messages from strangers, warnings when receiving friend requests, and a ban on speaking on server stages for unverified adults.
Alongside the update, Discord announced the launch of the Teen Council—a consultative board of 10–12 teenagers aged 13 to 17—who will participate in developing new features, policies, and educational initiatives for the platform. According to Discord, involving teens in decision-making will help better address their real needs and expectations while maintaining a balance between safety, privacy, and autonomy in the digital environment.
