Tesla has reached an agreement with Samsung for $16.5 billion to produce AI6 chips for AI systems. This decision will replace the current AI5 chips from TSMC and will be used in the FSD autopilot, Optimus robots, and data centers. Previously, Tesla had already collaborated with Samsung on the production of the AI4 chip and the 2019 platform. The contract has become an important step for Samsung in the AI chip segment.
Tesla has signed a $16.5 billion agreement with Samsung for the production of next-generation chips for its artificial intelligence systems.
The new AI6 chip, also known as Hardware 6, is a universal solution that Tesla plans to use for Full Self-Driving autopilot, Optimus humanoid robots, and AI training in data centers.
The current AI5 chips for FSD autopilot are manufactured by TSMC, initially at its factory in Taiwan and later in Arizona. The previous generation, AI4, is already being produced by Samsung.
The contract is a significant success for Samsung, which previously struggled to attract major clients in the AI chip segment. Tesla's actual spending on chips may exceed the stated $16.5 billion.
Tesla will directly participate in optimizing the manufacturing process to accelerate production. In 2019, Tesla abandoned the Nvidia Drive platform and switched to its own FSD Computer chip, also developed and manufactured by Samsung. It included two redundant processors on a single board to enhance reliability in autonomous driving systems.
AI processors have become a key element of Tesla's strategy to transition from an automaker to a technology leader in AI and robotics.
