TechCrunch has extended the application deadline for Startup Battlefield 2026 to June 8.
Startup Battlefield 2026 is an international competition for technology startups held as part of the TechCrunch Disrupt conference in San Francisco. The application deadline has been extended to June 8, 2026, due to high interest from startups.
Isabelle Johannessen, Head of the Startup Battlefield program, noted that she sees the same situation every year: many startup founders believe their company is still “too early” to participate. According to her, founders often think they lack revenue, users, or scale; however, such projects are often the most promising for the program.
Startup Battlefield is not a competition for the most “polished” companies. The main criterion is the startup’s potential and its ability to truly change the market. Organizers are looking for projects with ideas that could become new categories in the industry, rather than just improved versions of existing solutions.
When reviewing applications, the team evaluates several factors. First and foremost is the product itself and how much it changes existing processes. The founding team also plays a crucial role: why these specific people are building this product, why now, and why they understand the problem better than others.
Geographic and sectoral diversity receive special attention. Startup Battlefield 200 is curated as a global sample of startups, so organizers actively consider projects from different countries and technology verticals.
TechCrunch also listed factors that do not hinder participation. For example, having media coverage is not a problem if the product itself has not yet received widespread attention. Companies in the pre-launch stage are allowed if they already have a working MVP. In this case, having customers or revenue is not mandatory.
Organizers note that many startups applied several times before making it into Startup Battlefield 200. Previous rejections, according to them, do not affect a company’s chances in the future.
Bootstrapped, Pre-Seed, and Seed startups can apply. Series A-stage companies are also considered, especially if they operate in capital-intensive industries or are developing outside Silicon Valley, where investment dynamics may differ.
TechCrunch provided specific advice on completing the application. Organizers recommend definitely showcasing a working product, not just presentations or concepts. They also advise honestly describing the competitive landscape and detailing the company’s origin story.
According to the Startup Battlefield team, one of the most common mistakes is an overly “polished” application, behind which it is difficult to see the real product and the company itself.
Startup Battlefield 2026 will take place as part of TechCrunch Disrupt from October 13 to 15 in San Francisco. The competition finale will conclude with the selection of the winner among the best startups of the year. Past participants and winners of the program include Cloudflare, Discord, and other major technology companies.
