OpenAI has announced plans to open its first office in New Delhi by the end of 2025. The company has already registered in India as a legal entity and begun building a local team. It will focus on strengthening collaboration with Indian partners, government agencies, businesses, developers, and educational institutions.
This is an important step in the effort to make advanced artificial intelligence technologies more accessible across the country and to create AI "for India and with India."
Along with this, the company has registered in India and already started hiring employees. Additionally, India is OpenAI's second-largest user market, and recently the cheapest ChatGPT subscription plan to date was launched there — at $4.60 per month.
India's Minister of Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, welcomed this initiative, noting its alignment with the goals of the IndiaAI mission to develop inclusive artificial intelligence. The government sees strategic partnership potential for innovation and democratizing access to AI technologies across the country.
A visit by Sam Altman himself to India is also planned for September 2025, further underscoring the seriousness of the company's intentions to expand its presence in the Indian market.
