OpenAI announced the removal of text chat limits in ChatGPT for all users. According to the company, the service is used by a billion people per week.
What changes for free users
GPT-5.6 Luna will become the default model for Free and Go tier users, replacing GPT-5.5 Instant. Along with the update, users will receive unlimited access to text chats, although restrictions on files, images, and other features will remain. A "Think" button will also be added, enabling a deeper level of reasoning for complex queries. The transition to GPT-5.6 Luna will begin this week, while unlimited chats and the "Think" button will become available during the week starting August 10.
What changes for paid users
Plus and Pro subscribers will gain access to the updated GPT-5.6 Sol — a version specifically tuned for everyday tasks such as quick questions, web search, planning, writing, and decision-making. According to OpenAI, this model provides more concise and accurate answers, uses less unnecessary formatting, and can correct the user if simple agreement is insufficient. This version is available only in the Chat section; the model used in Codex and ChatGPT Work remains unchanged.
Plus and Pro users also now have access to a slider that allows them to adjust how much time the model spends thinking about a response — ranging from quick everyday replies to extended analysis for planning, research, writing, and complex decisions.
What internal testing showed
According to OpenAI's internal evaluation, GPT-5.6 Luna made factual errors 62% less frequently than GPT-5.5 Instant in responses to questions from financial, medical, and legal domains, while GPT-5.6 Sol made them 68% less frequently.
The updated GPT-5.6 Sol is already available to Plus and Pro subscribers. Changes for Free and Go users will be available by the end of the week.
