OpenAI acquired MedTech startup Torch for $100 million
OpenAI has announced the acquisition of Torch, a small startup specializing in consolidating medical data, in a deal that sources estimate at approximately $100 million in stock.
Torch developed a technology that aggregates users' fragmented health data — including lab results, doctor visit records, information from wearable devices, and other medical details — and integrates them into a unified system the team referred to as "medical memory for AI."
Currently, four members of the Torch team will join OpenAI to work on integrating their technology into ChatGPT Health, a recently launched platform that allows users to upload and analyze their medical records using AI.
According to OpenAI representatives, the acquisition of Torch will enhance ChatGPT's healthcare capabilities, enabling the service to better assist people in managing and interpreting their medical data.
This acquisition reflects a broader trend of technology companies seeking to combine artificial intelligence and health technology to create more personalized and intelligent health tools.
