Nvidia announced its intention to invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI as part of a deal to build large-scale data centers for training and running artificial intelligence models. The companies signed a letter of intent to deploy 10 gigawatts of capacity—enough to power millions of homes—using Nvidia systems, which will form the foundation for OpenAI's next-generation AI infrastructure.
The deal could help OpenAI reduce its reliance on Microsoft, its largest investor and cloud resource provider. In January, Microsoft announced a revision of its partnership terms with OpenAI, allowing the ChatGPT developer to build additional AI infrastructure with other partners. Since then, OpenAI has begun collaborating on data center projects with several companies, including Stargate. The new deal will complement OpenAI's existing partnerships with Microsoft, Oracle, and SoftBank.
