New Line Cinema is preparing the third installment of the Mortal Kombat film series, based on the iconic video game by Midway Games. Screenwriter Jeremy Slater, who worked on the second film, has confirmed that he will return to work on the sequel.
The films based on the legendary fighting game continue to tell the story of the conflict between Earthrealm and Outworld. In the upcoming Mortal Kombat II, viewers will see the return of beloved characters — Liu Kang, Sonya Blade, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and Johnny Cage.
Simon McQuoid remains the director of the second and likely the third installment, with James Wan, Todd Garner, and E. Bennett Walsh serving as producers.
The first Mortal Kombat adaptation in 2021 was a successful reboot of the franchise, grossing $84 million. Mortal Kombat II is set to release on May 15, 2026, while Mortal Kombat III has officially entered development.
