Microsoft is testing an AI-based advanced search feature in the history of Edge in beta versions, using a local device model. Additionally, a media control center has been added with access to Picture-in-Picture mode and playback controls.
Microsoft has begun testing a new feature for its Edge browser that adds AI-powered search to browsing history. This new "advanced search" feature allows you to find websites in your browsing history even if you use a phrase, synonym, or even a typo similar to the name of the site you're looking for.
The new "advanced search" feature can be tested in beta versions of Edge. Once enabled, the sites you visit will appear in advanced search results for your history. The model on your device is trained using your data, which never leaves your device and is not sent to Microsoft.
This additional feature poses a smaller privacy risk than Microsoft's "Recall" feature, which takes screenshots of most of what you do on a PC with Copilot Plus to make it easier to find websites, photos, and documents. Using a local model limited to browser history is certainly better than storing everything you see on the screen in a local database.
Alongside AI-powered browsing history, Microsoft is also adding a media hub to Edge, which allows you to manage multiple media sources on websites. This media hub includes quick access to Picture-in-Picture mode in Edge, which itself receives enhanced controls, as well as the ability to manage music, video, or other sounds playing in Edge.
