Meta will introduce new Ray-Ban smart glasses for people with visual impairments.
Meta Platforms plans to unveil two new models of Ray-Ban smart glasses aimed at users with poor vision as early as next week. The devices are being developed in collaboration with EssilorLuxottica, the world’s largest eyewear manufacturer.
The new models, known by the codenames Scriber and Blazer, will come in two frame designs—rectangular and round. Although Meta glasses have previously supported prescription lenses, this marks the first time the devices are designed from the ground up specifically for this audience. They are expected to be sold through traditional optical retail stores.
However, these new models are not the next generation of Meta’s AI glasses but rather an expansion of the current lineup. The company continues to develop this segment as a key component of its artificial intelligence strategy.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has previously noted that billions of people worldwide wear glasses or contact lenses, and in the future, most of them could switch to AI-enabled smart devices.
Interest in this segment is also growing among other tech companies. For instance, Apple Inc. is also working on its own display-free glasses, which could be released in the coming years.
