Kazakhstan is integrating AI into its scientific infrastructure and strengthening technological foresight.
In 2026, declared the Year of Artificial Intelligence and Digitalization in Kazakhstan, the country is taking a strategic step toward integrating artificial intelligence into its scientific infrastructure. At the strategic session “Science and Technology Foresight of Kazakhstan: From Data to Solutions,” held in Almaty, Dmitry Mun, Deputy Minister of Digital Development and Artificial Intelligence, presented the vision of the Ministry of Digital Development and AI’s role in developing national science, implementing predictive analytics, and establishing a new forecasting system.
More than 400 people participated in the event, including leading scientists, representatives of ministries, industry, universities, and research institutes. Key areas for the development of the national foresight research and predictive analytics system were discussed, including the creation of a unified scientific and technological forecasting system at both the national and regional levels, as well as ways to enhance interaction between the National Academy of Sciences and regions, involving local akimats and industry in defining priority scientific and technological development directions.
The main event of the session was the official opening of the Kazakhstan-Korean AI SilkNet Center, a joint initiative of the National Academy of Sciences under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI). Dr. Sik Lee, President of KISTI, participated in the opening ceremony.
AI SilkNet will become the country’s first national platform for predictive analytics and scientific and technological foresight. The platform provides tools for big data analytics, identification of global and national technological trends, and risk assessment, while also supporting strategic planning in the field of science and technology.
According to Dmitry Mun, the new platform opens up significant opportunities for national science:
— analysis of large volumes of scientific information
— identification of global technological trends
— bibliometric analysis and patent analysis
— development of predictive scenarios for industry development
— creation of specialized AI agents for scientific and expert tasks.
AI SilkNet will also enable the Academy to accelerate the preparation of strategic reports and establish a system for monitoring global technological changes.
KISTI is considered one of the world’s leading institutions in the field of scientific and technological information and forecasting, specializing in the implementation of AI and high-performance computing in research, the development of national scientific and technological infrastructure, and future forecasting. The establishment of the AI SilkNet Center opens new prospects for transferring advanced international practices into Kazakhstan’s science system and strengthening strategic partnership between the two countries in the fields of AI and innovation.
