Which programming languages are benefiting from AI
A couple of years ago, choosing a programming language was a matter of personal preferences, job availability, and corporate standards. In 2025–2026, a new and unexpectedly influential factor joined these: compatibility with AI tools. Let’s examine who came out ahead and why, based on data from major industry reports.
TypeScript Surpasses Python for the First Time
The most notable event was the surge in TypeScript's popularity. According to the GitHub Octoverse 2025 report, last August, the language surpassed Python and JavaScript in the number of active developers on the platform for the first time. Over the year, the number of TypeScript users grew by 66%.
Experts attribute this not to a decline in Python's popularity, but to the widespread adoption of AI tools. TypeScript helps identify errors during the coding process, making AI-generated code easier to verify and safer to use in real-world projects. It is no coincidence that most modern frontend frameworks already use TypeScript in their starter templates.
Python Has Not Lost — It Remains the Leading Language for AI
Despite TypeScript's leadership, Python continues to grow actively. According to GitHub Octoverse 2025, the number of developers increased by 48%, reaching nearly 2.6 million — only slightly less than TypeScript's figures.
The reason is obvious: Python remains the primary language for artificial intelligence and data analysis. PyTorch, TensorFlow, Hugging Face, and most modern machine learning libraries are built on it. Even if the most resource-intensive computations are performed in C++, Rust, or CUDA, the control logic usually remains in Python.
Growth is also confirmed by other studies. The Stack Overflow Developer Survey 2025 recorded a seven-percentage-point increase in Python's share, while the number of AI projects using Jupyter Notebook continues to rise.
Bash Unexpectedly Gains Popularity
One of the most surprising findings of Octoverse was the growth of Bash. According to ByteIota, the use of the language in AI-generated projects increased by 206% over the year.
The reason is quite simple. Bash remains one of the most convenient tools for automating routine tasks, configuring servers, and launching processes. AI agents handle writing such scripts well due to the language's simple and predictable syntax, giving Bash a new wave of popularity.
Rust Becomes the Language of AI Infrastructure
Rust has ranked first among the most loved programming languages according to Stack Overflow for eight consecutive years. Now, it is increasingly used in creating infrastructure for artificial intelligence.
As Kryptonite notes, Rust is actively applied in open-source projects related to launching and integrating machine learning models. The language is valued for memory safety and high performance — it eliminates entire classes of errors, including memory leaks and race conditions.
ITVDN also points out that these features make Rust particularly in demand in projects where AI tools help write low-level code, and the cost of any error is too high.
C# Strengthens Its Position
According to an analysis of programming language ratings by Kryptonite, C# was again named "Language of the Year" in the TIOBE Index and continues to firmly hold its place in the top ten most popular programming languages.
Today, C# is used not only for enterprise development. It remains a key language for creating games on Unity, Microsoft cloud services, and AI applications within the .NET ecosystem, which has been actively developing in recent years alongside Azure AI.
