How to Keep Your Job in the Age of AI: A Strategy from Paul Graham
Instead of searching for "safe" areas from AI, Paul Graham advises focusing on doing your work so well and with such interest that automation cannot replace the results of human labor.

Paul Graham is confident that AI is changing not industries, but work methods. This is why those who can preserve their professions will be those who step beyond routine and find genuine passion and depth in their field.
AI in Professions
Paul Graham, founder of the startup incubator Y Combinator, believes that asking which professions will be protected from AI is not entirely correct. AI is effective not so much in specific tasks, but in work methods themselves, namely in routine. Therefore, to keep your job, you should avoid activities that boil down to monotonous and predictable processes.
Entry-level programmer positions are already beginning to disappear, while leading engineers and specialists capable of founding their own companies remain in demand and receive high salaries. The best advice is to do your job so well that you rise above the level of useless work. Achieving such a level is impossible without a genuine passion for your work: it is difficult to become truly outstanding in a profession if you do not have a deep interest in it.
A Look at the Future
At the same time, views on the future of the labor market in the AI era differ. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg suggested in January that AI could already write code at the level of a mid-level engineer this year. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei stated in an interview with Axios that within the next five years, AI could reduce entry-level office jobs by up to 50%. Meanwhile, according to a report from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York published in February, unemployment among computer science graduates today is higher at 6.1%, compared to 4.6% for history graduates or 3% for biology graduates.
However, not all company leaders share this pessimism. Mark Cuban believes that AI will create new companies and jobs, leading to an increase in overall employment. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang holds a similar position. At the VivaTech 2025 conference in Paris, he emphasized that AI will change work processes for everyone, including himself, but at the same time, it will create new opportunities.
