Google has introduced a new AI agent, Gemini, capable of performing tasks on behalf of users, planning work, and connecting to corporate systems. Initially, the company will deploy the solution in the enterprise segment before making it available to regular users.
The launch was announced on October 8, 2026, at the Google Cloud event. Unlike chatbots that respond to queries, the new agent can receive goals and independently plan the steps to achieve them. It utilizes tools and specialized skills, as well as connects to companies' internal systems.
Users will be able to set goals for the agent, rather than just providing individual instructions. Gemini will be able to select the appropriate AI model on its own. Users will also be able to manually select a model, including Claude from Anthropic. In the future, Google plans to expand the list of available models by adding open-source solutions and other commercial models.
The agent will be able to work with Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Slack, Jira, Confluence, Git, BigQuery, Databricks, Postgres, and Snowflake. Connection to Model Context Protocol servers, which allow AI to interact with external tools and data, is also provided.
Gemini will receive its own account in Google Workspace, an email address, and a work context. The agent will be able to take into account the company structure, employee time zones, their calendars, and approval processes. Interaction with it will be possible through mentions, email, file sharing, and group chats.
Users will be able to track task execution in a special interface that displays the agent's progress, delegation of tasks to other agents, tool usage, and overall progress. All actions will be logged in an audit log on behalf of the agent itself.
The solution will be available on iOS and Android devices, Windows and macOS computers, via the command line, Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, ServiceNow, and Slack.
Gemini has more than 1 billion active monthly users. Nearly 90% of companies on the Fortune 100 list use Gemini Enterprise.
Among the first testers of the new agent are the sports brand On, Shopify, and PayPal. Google also announced new tools for controlling corporate AI spending, including task distribution among models, automatic selection of the appropriate model, and real-time cost limits.
