Jeff Bezos launches satellite internet through Blue Origin
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos announced the launch of a new satellite internet project through his space company Blue Origin, intensifying competition with SpaceX’s Starlink network.
Blue Origin plans to deploy a global communications network called TeraWave, consisting of 5,408 satellites. Deployment is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2027. The project targets corporate clients, governments, and data centers rather than mass-market consumers.
According to the company, TeraWave will be able to provide data transfer speeds of up to 6 terabits per second thanks to the use of optical inter-satellite links. This significantly exceeds the capabilities of existing commercial satellite networks and could serve as the foundation for future space-based digital infrastructure.
The new Blue Origin project intensifies the global race in satellite internet, where Starlink dominates with tens of thousands of satellites in orbit and millions of users worldwide. Meanwhile, Amazon is also developing its own network, with the Project Kuiper recently renamed to Leo.
Experts note that next-generation satellite networks are viewed not only as a means of communication but also as a potential platform for hosting computing infrastructure in space, amid growing demand for computing power for artificial intelligence and cloud services.
