Apple unveiled the new MacBook Pro with a PROLED XDR display. It is the first Mac with touch control. The laptop is available in two sizes, 14 and 16 inches, with M5 Pro or M5 Max chips.
The display uses tandem OLED technology, featuring two layers of self-illuminating pixels. Peak brightness reaches 2000 nits, contrast is 10 million to one, and the refresh rate is up to 120 Hz. The display supports P3 and Adobe RGB color spaces, making it suitable for photographers, designers, and video editors. The bezels are thinner, and the screen diagonal has increased to 14.2 and 16.3 inches.
The touch sensor is built directly into the display panel rather than layered on top, ensuring fast touch response. You can swipe to scroll through websites, pinch to zoom in on photos, drag slides from one presentation to another, and double-tap to maximize a window. Designers can draw across the entire screen, musicians can play virtual instruments, and developers can test their iPhone and iPad apps. Many apps work with touch immediately because macOS automatically converts touches into clicks. Touch support will also be added to Notion, Canva, Zoom, Microsoft Office, Adobe Lightroom, DaVinci Resolve, and Blender. The new hinge prevents the screen from wobbling when pressed, and stabilization aligns the camera image during video calls.
Instead of a camera notch, the display features a Dynamic Island, similar to the iPhone. It houses Spotlight search, Live Activities notifications, and the Siri AI assistant. You can answer calls, accept files via AirDrop, or pause music from there.
The laptops are lighter and thinner. The 14-inch model weighs approximately 1.4 kilograms, and the 16-inch model weighs about 1.8 kilograms. The battery lasts up to 24 hours, and it charges to 50 percent in 30 minutes. It features up to 128 gigabytes of unified memory and up to 16 terabytes of storage. On the M5 Max version, large language models can run directly on the laptop without an internet connection. The MacBook Pro also includes six speakers with bass that is 50 percent deeper, a 12-megapixel camera, three Thunderbolt 5 ports, HDMI, a memory card slot, MagSafe, and a headphone jack. The laptop runs on macOS 27.
The 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro starts at $2899, and the 16-inch model starts at $3399. Versions with M5 Max start at $4499 and $4799, respectively. Pre-orders are already open in 30 countries, with sales beginning on November 6.
