Amazon has introduced an AI platform for automating the operations of medical clinics.
Amazon, through its cloud division Amazon Web Services, has introduced a new artificial intelligence-based solution called Amazon Connect Health, designed to automate administrative processes in the healthcare system. The service aims to help medical organizations reduce staff workload and accelerate patients' access to medical care.
The new platform integrates with electronic health records and uses agentic AI to automate key processes. The system can understand patient requests in natural language and perform a range of administrative tasks:
— verify patient identity and check insurance coverage
— find available appointment times and schedule patient visits
— collect and analyze medical history prior to consultation
— transcribe doctor-patient conversations during appointments
— automatically generate clinical notes and medical codes for billing.
For example, if a patient calls to schedule a doctor's appointment for the evening of the following week, the system analyzes the request, checks the doctor's availability, and books the appointment directly during the call. If the situation requires specialist involvement, the request is automatically forwarded to a clinic employee.
Pilot projects have already demonstrated the technology's effectiveness. At UC San Diego Health, a medical system that processes approximately 3.2 million patient inquiries annually, the use of the platform's features reduced call processing time by about one minute, freed up approximately 630 hours per week from patient data verification tasks, and decreased dropped calls by 30%, with some departments seeing reductions of up to 60%.
The platform also supports patients throughout all stages of interaction with the clinic. Before the visit, the system analyzes the medical history and generates a brief summary for the doctor. During the appointment, with the patient's consent, it records the conversation and creates a draft of clinical notes. After the visit, the system generates a patient-friendly summary of the consultation and prepares medical codes for insurance payments. According to AWS, this allows documents for billing insurance companies to be prepared within minutes instead of hours or days.
The company notes that the solution was developed with consideration for medical data privacy requirements and security standards. The system uses a transparency mechanism, where each fragment of text generated by AI can be traced back to its source—for example, a recording of a doctor-patient conversation or a medical record.
At AWS, Amazon Connect Health is described as the company's first specialized solution for healthcare organizations, and they expect the technology to help reduce the administrative burden on medical staff and improve patients' access to healthcare.
