Amazon is investing over $4 billion to build a new AWS cloud region in Chile by the end of 2026. The project includes three availability zones to meet demand for secure infrastructure and to develop local talent. Key customers include LATAM Airlines, Agrosuper, and Andrés Bello National University. This expansion complements previously launched services such as AWS Outposts (2021) and private connectivity (2023). Competitors Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure have also been developing infrastructure in the country since 2020–2021.
Amazon announced a major investment project aimed at developing Amazon Web Services in Chile. By the end of 2026, the company will invest over $4 billion in creating a new AWS cloud region, which will include three availability zones—groups of isolated data centers.
This move will meet the growing demand for cloud technologies in Chile and Latin America, providing secure, reliable, and efficient infrastructure. In addition to building data centers, Amazon plans to attract and develop local specialists to work and maintain the new AWS region.
Chile already has major AWS customers, including LATAM Airlines, Agrosuper, and the Andrés Bello National University. This is not the first time Amazon has invested in the country's cloud infrastructure. In 2021, the company launched AWS Outposts, expanding local access to AWS capabilities. And in 2023, it introduced private connections between AWS and enterprise data centers, as well as local cloud zones to minimize latency.
Amazon is not the only company developing cloud technologies in Chile. In 2021, Google Cloud launched its first cloud region in the country, and Microsoft Azure announced plans to build data centers in Chile as early as 2020.
