New international laboratories on AI and science will be established in Kazakhstan in collaboration with Belgium.
During the state visit of the Head of State to Belgium, a number of strategic agreements in the fields of artificial intelligence, science, digital infrastructure, and space technologies were signed in Brussels. On behalf of Kazakhstan, the documents were signed by the Deputy Prime Minister — Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Development Zhaslan Madiev and the Minister of Science and Higher Education Sayasat Nurbek.
Agreements on cooperation with Ghent University and KU Leuven have been signed. They provide for joint research, academic mobility, personnel training, and technology projects within the Horizon Europe program. The new arrangements create a practical foundation for launching research programs, forming international laboratories, and preparing joint applications.
Cooperation with Ghent University focuses on mathematical modeling, scientific computing, digital twins, and AI. Partnership with KU Leuven covers sustainable materials, critical metals, engineering training, and technology commercialization.
The central platform for implementing the AI for Science and Innovation agenda in Kazakhstan will be ALEM.AI — a platform that combines the capabilities of AI, science, universities, startups, and industrial partners. The International Scientific and Technical Center will also be involved in joint initiatives.
A separate document is the Agreement on Joint Activities between JSC "NC Kazakhstan Space Agency" and the Luxembourg company Hydrosat S.a.r.l. The parties will implement a pilot project on water resource management using Copernicus and Hydrosat satellite technologies in the Zhambyl region. In the future, the project is planned to be scaled up to Central Asia.
The reached agreements are aimed at developing the AI ecosystem in Kazakhstan, strengthening international scientific cooperation, and implementing advanced technologies in the economy, education, and public administration.
