Uber has announced the launch of Uber Air, a service that will allow users to book electric air taxis from Joby Aviation directly through the Uber app.
Joby plans to begin its first passenger flights later this year in Dubai. This project marks a significant milestone in the partnership between Uber and Joby, aimed at developing multimodal urban transportation.
Users will be able to book a flight with a single click. To do this, they need to enter their destination in the Uber app. If the route is suitable, the Uber Air powered by Joby option will appear in the list of available services. The app will automatically book all stages of the trip, including the Uber Black transfer to and from the vertiport.
Joby's electric air taxis are designed to carry up to four passengers. The cabin is equipped with comfortable seats and large panoramic windows. Flights will be operated by certified commercial pilots.
The aircraft use six tilting propellers, which enable vertical takeoff and transition to horizontal flight. The maximum speed reaches approximately 320 km/h, with a range of up to 160 km on a single charge. The design incorporates multiple levels of system redundancy for safety and is adapted for use in urban environments, including through low noise levels.
Before launching commercial operations in the United States, Joby is undergoing the certification process with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). To date, Joby's fleet has completed over 50,000 miles of test flights and has moved into the final stage of certification.
