SpaceX has opened positions for working on data centers in space
SpaceX announced plans to create orbital data centers and has already begun recruiting employees to implement the project.
According to SpaceX's vision, a constellation of approximately one million satellites will be deployed into space to function as data centers. Each satellite will be capable of providing up to 100 kW of computing power per ton, with the total annual increase in computing resources potentially reaching up to 100 GW of AI capacity.
Elon Musk believes that placing data centers in space is the only way to scale infrastructure for artificial intelligence in the long term, and that within 30-36 months, space will become the most economically viable location for AI infrastructure.
The key issue is not so much the cost of electricity, but its availability. Outside of China, the growth in electricity production remains limited, while demand from the AI industry is growing rapidly.
As part of the project, SpaceX has already opened positions for key engineering roles. In particular, the company is looking for laser technology specialists to work on space-based data centers. Despite skepticism from some experts, Musk insists that placing computing infrastructure in space is a logical continuation of AI development.
