Sri Lanka has officially launched the Digital Nomad Visa program for foreign specialists working remotely for overseas companies. The new visa allows residents to stay in the country for up to one year, with the option to renew annually.
Applications are open to foreigners over the age of 18 who work remotely, freelance, or run a business registered outside of Sri Lanka. The main requirement is a verified monthly income of at least $2,000. If more than two dependents move with the applicant, an additional income of $500 per dependent must be confirmed.
The application fee is $500 per year for each applicant, including spouses and children. Visa holders will be able to open a bank account in Sri Lanka, rent housing, subscribe to local telecommunications services, and enroll children in international and private schools.
However, visa holders are prohibited from working for local companies—all income must come from abroad. To obtain the visa, applicants also need medical insurance, a certificate of no criminal record, a medical certificate, and a recommendation from Sri Lanka's Ministry of Digital Economy.
The government expects the new program to attract digital nomads to the country, increase tourism spending, and strengthen Sri Lanka's position as a destination for long-term stays by remote workers.
