OpenAI launched ChatGPT for Teens — a version of the chatbot focused on education
The new version is automatically enabled for users aged thirteen to seventeen — if the system determines the age is under eighteen or the teenager specifies it themselves.
ChatGPT for Teens includes a Study Mode feature that breaks down problems step by step through guiding questions rather than providing ready-made answers. If a teenager asks for a direct solution, the chatbot suggests working through the topic independently — a function OpenAI refers to as responsible homework reminders. Additionally, quizzes, visualizations for learning mathematics and natural sciences, and the Study Hours feature are available, allowing users to set specific hours during which Study Mode activates automatically.
For this launch, OpenAI also announced a partnership with CodeAI — an organization that will help students and teachers understand how AI works.
Teen accounts have enhanced content restrictions by default, covering self-harm, violence, eating disorders, dangerous activities, and sexually explicit or graphic material. The updated model specification for users under eighteen also prohibits the chatbot from engaging in romantic conversations, encouraging emotional attachment, or claiming to have feelings or consciousness.
Parents with connected family settings can set "quiet hours," receive notifications in certain high-risk situations — including those related to eating disorders — and manage some account security settings. The app also includes reminders not to upload personal and confidential images, as well as regular prompts to take breaks from usage.
