On August 11, OpenAI launched a standalone desktop ChatGPT application for Linux. Previously, users of the operating system could only interact with the chatbot via a web browser, while versions for Windows and macOS had been available for a long time.
According to the company, Linux has remained one of the most in-demand platforms for a desktop application, and this release extends ChatGPT and Codex to all major desktop operating systems.
Officially supported desktop versions include Ubuntu 24.04 and 26.04 LTS, Debian 13, as well as Fedora 43 and 44. Although there are hundreds of distributions in the Linux ecosystem, the versions selected by OpenAI serve as the foundation for many derivative builds that should also be compatible with the application.
Anthropic released its desktop Claude application for Linux approximately a month earlier. It works on Ubuntu 22.04 and newer, as well as Debian 12 and newer.
