OpenAI offers developers free daily tokens in exchange for consent to use requests and responses to train models. Limits are up to 1 million tokens per day for powerful models (GPT-5, GPT-4o, o1, o3) at tiers three through five, and up to 10 million for lightweight models (GPT-5-mini, GPT-4o-mini, o4-mini); for tiers one and two, the limits are lower — 250,000 and 2.5 million, respectively. Data sharing settings are managed through the data controls section, and accounts with Zero Data Retention are not eligible for the program.
OpenAI has updated its API terms: the company now offers developers free daily tokens in exchange for permission to use their requests and responses to train models.
By default, OpenAI does not use data from business users—including ChatGPT Business, ChatGPT Enterprise, and API—to improve its models. However, the company now offers an incentive for those willing to agree to this.
Organizations that choose to share data can manage these settings at the project or organization level through the data controls section. The data will be used to analyze usage patterns, assess model quality, and shape future training datasets.
Third- to fifth-tier developers receive up to 1 million free tokens per day for powerful models—including GPT-5, GPT-4o, o1, and o3—and up to 10 million tokens per day for lighter models, including GPT-5-mini, GPT-4o-mini, and o4-mini. For first- and second-tier developers, the limits are lower—250,000 and 2.5 million tokens, respectively.
If daily usage exceeds the set limit, over-limit requests are billed at standard prices. Moreover, if a single request itself exceeds the remaining daily quota, it is fully charged at the regular rate.
Free tokens are applied automatically and do not apply to fine-tuned models, the fine-tuning process, evaluations, or tool calls.
Users can disable data sharing at any time. OpenAI also states that it takes measures to reduce the amount of personal information in training datasets. Only the organization owner can enable or disable data sharing. Accounts with Zero Data Retention enabled cannot participate in the program.
Data sharing settings can be managed on the data controls page in the organization’s account.
