OpenAI could raise more than $100 billion in a new round of investments
OpenAI is close to completing the first phase of a new funding round, through which the company could raise more than $100 billion. If the round closes on the discussed terms, it will become the largest in the history of private technology companies.
With the upcoming financing, OpenAI's total valuation could exceed $850 billion, higher than the previously expected $830 billion. The pre-money valuation of the company will remain at $730 billion. The raised funds are planned to be directed toward developing infrastructure and scaling AI products, including ChatGPT, amid multi-trillion-dollar investments in computing power.
The main part of the first phase of the round will be provided by strategic investors, including Amazon, SoftBank, Nvidia, and Microsoft. Total commitments could approach $100 billion, and the distribution of shares is planned to be completed by the end of the month. Investments are expected to come in several tranches throughout 2026.
As part of its partnership with Amazon, OpenAI also plans to expand the use of the company's cloud infrastructure and chips. The second phase of the round, which will involve venture capital funds, sovereign wealth funds, and other financial investors, may close later and increase the total amount of funds raised. Final deal terms have not yet been approved and may change.
