OpenAI is developing its first consumer device—a portable, screenless smart speaker designed to serve as a personal AI companion powered by ChatGPT. This was reported by Bloomberg, citing sources familiar with the project.
According to the publication, the device is intended for home use and will be able to control smart home devices, play music, answer questions, send messages, and perform other tasks using ChatGPT. The company views it not as a standard smart speaker, but as a new type of computer specifically created for the artificial intelligence era.
A key feature of the device will be personalization. As it is used, the AI will learn the owner's habits, anticipate their needs, and offer information without requiring additional prompts. OpenAI expects the device to be perceived more as a digital assistant than as a traditional speaker.
The new product will feature a built-in rechargeable battery, allowing it to be moved between rooms. It is also reported to include a camera and other sensors that will help the device understand its surroundings and the context of user interaction.
The voice interaction will be powered by a new version of ChatGPT's voice mode—GPT-Live. This allows the system to listen and respond simultaneously, process information faster, and maintain a more natural conversation.
The hardware platform is being developed by a team of former Apple employees. Following the acquisition of startup io Products for $6.5 billion, former Apple chief designer Jony Ive joined the project, along with former heads of the iPhone, Mac, and other device development divisions. The design of the product line is being created in collaboration with the studio LoveFrom.
According to Bloomberg, OpenAI plans to unveil the device later this year, with a commercial launch potentially occurring in 2027. However, these timelines may change due to a legal dispute with Apple, which accuses OpenAI of using trade secrets in the development of its hardware products.
In the future, the company is also considering creating a mobile AI device capable of replacing smartphones, as well as wearable gadgets and home robots.
