Meta is preparing a demonstration of a full-size AI avatar at Connect 2026

Meta will showcase a full-body photorealistic digital character at the Connect 2026 conference, created using Codec Avatars technology. The company plans to demonstrate it during the Project Phoenix presentation.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and CTO Andrew Bosworth previously reviewed Meta's developments in holographic video calling. Now, the company can showcase the technology during the Phoenix presentation at Connect 2026.

In the demonstration, Bosworth is expected to appear as a full-body photorealistic holographic avatar. The technology will utilize Codec Avatars — Meta's research project aimed at creating realistic digital copies of people for virtual communication and telepresence.

Meta has been developing Codec Avatars for several years. The company has gradually transitioned from systems requiring specialized equipment to create avatars to models capable of generating photorealistic characters based on a limited number of images and operating on devices with mobile-level computing resources.

In 2026, Meta also presented research on creating full-body Codec Avatars based on a limited amount of input data. Such avatars can be controlled using cameras and sensors from the headset.

References to the Hologram Calling feature, related to Codec Avatars, have already been found in Meta's software. Elements related to setting up and using Hologram avatars were also discovered in the Meta AI app. This may indicate that Meta considers the technology not just as a research project, but as a foundation for future user communication features.
