Kazakhstani students won five gold medals at the International Physics Olympiad
The Kazakhstan national team has for the first time in history taken first place in the team standings of the 56th International Physics Olympiad, International Physics Olympiad, IPhO 2026, which was held in Bucaramanga, Colombia. All five participants of the national team won gold medals — a result the country had never achieved before at any international school olympiad.
This year, IPhO brought together more than 400 top students from 90 countries. Participants competed in two rounds — theoretical and experimental — solving complex physics problems and completing laboratory work.
The gold medals for Kazakhstan were won by Amirbek Azatbekov, a 12th-grade student at NIS Physics and Mathematics Track in Astana; Roman Cheremnov, an 11th-grade student at the same school; Nurgul Egenbergenova, an 11th-grade student at NURORDA School-Lyceum; Ilyas Kazymbek, a 12th-grade student at Spectrum International School; and Damir Kurman, a 12th-grade student at the International School "Miras" in Almaty.
