Google purchased the database of Spirit Airlines, a US budget airline that declared bankruptcy, for $10 million. The company's data will be used to improve Google's products and artificial intelligence models.
Spirit Airlines ceased all flights in May and has since been selling off assets as part of its bankruptcy proceedings. The deal included not only the database but also aircraft and equipment.
The data set acquired by Google included electronic correspondence and internal company communications, schedules, booking and transaction data, loyalty program information, as well as employee personnel records.
Google stated that personal data had been removed from the acquired data set and that the company would not receive any personal information. The company clarified that it acquired a portion of Spirit Airlines' large corporate data set, which will help improve its products and artificial intelligence models.
In recent years, airlines have increasingly used artificial intelligence to set ticket prices and plan schedules more efficiently.
The second-largest bid was offered by Mercor.io — $7.5 million for the database.
The final decision on the sale must be made by Judge Sean Lane at a bankruptcy court hearing on Wednesday.
The sale is also unusual for airline bankruptcies. Typically, bankrupt airlines are entirely acquired by another airline, and their data is integrated into the new company's systems. Spirit Airlines became the first major US airline in 25 years to completely cease operations.
