Google has introduced a new AI-powered image creation service called Google Pics. It is built on the Nano Banana model and leverages the generative capabilities of Gemini, designed for creating presentations, advertising materials, social media posts, and other graphic assets within Workspace.
Users describe their desired image using a text prompt, and the service offers several design options to choose from. Images can also be uploaded from a local device, Google Drive, or Google Photos and refined using AI. A key feature of Pics is precise editing of individual objects within an image: users can select, move, resize, or transform specific elements without affecting the rest of the image. Parallel processing of multiple edits is also supported.
Special attention has been given to working with text within images—text can be edited and translated into 29 languages, with the service striving to preserve the original font and styling. Final images can be cropped to fit formats for web, social media, print, and digital platforms, and resolution can be enhanced up to 2K and 4K.
Google Pics is integrated into Google Docs and Slides, allowing users to select and edit images directly within documents or presentations without opening a separate application. The service is also available as a standalone app, with Google Drive integration coming in the coming weeks. Like other Workspace products, Pics supports collaboration—users can share an image via a link, enabling multiple people to work on it simultaneously.
With this launch, Google enters the design tools market, currently dominated by Canva and Adobe Express. The company explicitly notes that while AI-generated images have proven effective for personal use, business results have historically been inconsistent and required switching between different applications.
Access to Google Pics is available starting September 1, 2026, for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, as well as Google Workspace users on Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Standard, and Enterprise Plus plans, and Google AI Pro for Education subscribers.
