Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky intends to establish a new artificial intelligence laboratory.
Chesky joins the ranks of Silicon Valley executives who are dissatisfied with the solutions released by leading AI labs. Although Airbnb has implemented AI coding tools, last year Chesky stated that the company has not yet entered into partnerships with language model developers, as existing products have not yet reached the required level.
Chesky met Sam Altman as early as 2006 through the Y Combinator accelerator, where Airbnb was incubated. Following OpenAI's rapid growth, he began meeting regularly with Altman, advising him on managing a fast-growing technology company. When OpenAI's board of directors fired Altman, Chesky helped organize his return: he provided public relations advice and attracted support from influential figures in Silicon Valley.
The exact focus of the new laboratory is not yet disclosed. Potential areas include user interaction and design, fields to which Chesky paid special attention at Airbnb. However, he will not lead the laboratory: sources confirm that Chesky will retain his position as CEO of Airbnb. The new leader will have to compete not only with other AI companies but also interact with the presumed chairman, known for his demanding management style.
