DeepSeek released Harness — a tool for creating autonomous AI agents
Chinese artificial intelligence company DeepSeek is entering a new market beyond large language models and has released a preview of the long-awaited Harness — a software framework that helps developers turn AI models into autonomous agents.
The launch of Harness on August 13 marks a strategic pivot for DeepSeek toward building foundational digital infrastructure for autonomous AI agents — systems capable of using AI models to interact with external software, execute code, and independently perform complex tasks.
Following previous beta testing, participating developers noted that DeepSeek Harness differs from traditional software toolkits by giving programmers greater control over how AI agents think and act. Each core component of the system is presented as a modular plugin that developers can replace or combine with one another.
Tools like DeepSeek Harness are rapidly becoming an important layer of AI systems. Competition in the industry is gradually shifting from the capabilities of the models themselves to how effectively AI agents can interact with real-world software and perform tasks autonomously.
In March, DeepSeek hired former Jane Street engineer Tianyu Cui, who joined a recently formed team focused on developing Harness. This move comes amid growing popularity of powerful AI agents, including Anthropic's Claude Code.
For various corporate and development tasks, DeepSeek Harness offers four operating modes. The standard mode is designed for general tasks, the coding mode allows AI to write code while simultaneously managing multiple applications, the creative mode gives the system the ability to experiment with custom tools, and the minimal mode is intended for isolated testing.
The launch of Harness demonstrates that DeepSeek is gradually expanding its focus beyond large language models and betting on the development of autonomous AI agents.
