OpenAI released an Apple Messages plugin for the ChatGPT app on macOS. It gives the chatbot access to conversations in iMessage, SMS, and RCS — ChatGPT reads messages, finds the necessary chats, composes replies, and sends them on behalf of the user.
The plugin works only on Macs with Apple Silicon processors and is available within ChatGPT Work and Codex modes — the function is not available in a regular ChatGPT chat. To set it up, the user grants the app full disk access, as well as permissions to access contacts and automation tools.
By default, ChatGPT sends a message only after confirmation — the user sees the text and recipient before sending. You can allow the bot to send messages to a specific chat without confirmation each time, but OpenAI warns that this removes the last opportunity for a person to review the text before sending.
The company stated that the plugin works locally on the device and does not create a global index of all the user's messages. The update also syncs pinned chats between the desktop version of ChatGPT and the iOS app.
