ChatGPT has reached one billion users worldwide.

OpenAI's ChatGPT chatbot has reached the milestone of 1 billion active users per month worldwide. According to analytics firm Sensor Tower, the app set an absolute record for speed—no other service had ever reached this figure so quickly.

ChatGPT hit the 1 billion monthly active users mark in May, approximately three years after its launch, outpacing the growth rates of Google Maps, TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube, reports Sensor Tower.

Against the backdrop of this success, competition in the artificial intelligence market is intensifying. ChatGPT users in the US who installed the Anthropic Claude app in the first quarter of 2026 spent 5% less time in ChatGPT a month after installation compared to their average usage over the preceding eight months.

As of the second quarter of 2026, Claude has 56 million monthly active users worldwide. Meanwhile, the service's annual audience growth amounted to approximately 640%, compared to 62% for ChatGPT.
