Borderlands 4 — the long-awaited sequel to the legendary looter-shooter series by Gearbox Software and 2K. The game was released on September 12, 2025, and transports players to a new planet, Kairos, where tons of weapons, dynamic combat, crossplay, and the return of the Vault Hunter role await.
Borderlands 4 is available on Steam, Epic Games Store, PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, while the Nintendo Switch 2 version is in development. The price starts at $69.99 for the standard edition, with Deluxe and Ultimate editions available that include a season pass.
Plot and Atmosphere
The plot revolves around the search for a new vault on Kairos and the battle against the mysterious Timekeeper. Along the way, players will encounter familiar characters and new NPCs, all rendered in the signature Borderlands style.
Even with more restrained humor and less expressive villains, Borderlands 4 continues to delight with its crazy atmosphere, ironic jokes, and grotesque dialogues.
Key features that distinguish Borderlands 4 from previous entries:
— new movement options: players can now double jump, slide, glide in the air, and use a grappling hook, making combat and exploration more dynamic
— expanded arsenal: weapons can be upgraded and their parts changed directly in-game, with the ability to add modules, new grenades, and heavy weaponry
— updated combat system: Rep Kits for quick recovery have been introduced, along with new types of powerful attacks and flexible difficulty settings in co-op mode
— living open world: the planet Kairos has changed — there is now weather, day-night cycles, random events, and more activity on the map
— improved co-op: crossplay support, the return of split-screen, and personalized loot for each player.
Things to Consider
— plot and characters: critics note that the story is not particularly memorable, antagonists are less vibrant, and the humor has become more restrained compared to previous entries
— technical issues on PC: some players report FPS drops, rare crashes, and other minor bugs that can occur even on high-end systems
— level and difficulty balance: certain missions and enemies may seem too easy or, conversely, require more effort, especially when playing co-op with friends of different levels
— empty zones: although the world looks alive, some parts of the map feel less eventful, with activity unevenly distributed.
