Apple has changed its CEO for the first time in 15 years — John Ternus will lead the company
Starting September 1, 2026, Tim Cook will transition to the role of Executive Chairman of the Board, while John Ternus, currently Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, will assume the position of Chief Executive Officer.
The decision was unanimously approved by the company's Board of Directors and is the result of a long-term succession plan. Until the end of summer, Cook will continue to serve as CEO and will work alongside Ternus to ensure a smooth transition of leadership.
In his new role as Executive Chairman, Cook will focus on specific strategic matters, including engagement with regulators and government entities worldwide.
Tim Cook has led Apple since 2011. During this time, the company has introduced new device categories to the market, including the Apple Watch, AirPods, and Apple Vision Pro, and significantly expanded its services business. Apple's market capitalization has grown from approximately $350 billion to $4 trillion under his leadership.
John Ternus has been with Apple since 2001. He has overseen hardware development across key product lines, including the iPhone, Mac, iPad, and Apple Watch. In 2021, Ternus joined the company's executive leadership team.
Additionally, starting in September, current Board Chairman Arthur Levinson will become Lead Independent Director, and Ternus will join the Apple Board of Directors.
